From Leibniz's belief that the I Ching illustrated the principles of calculus to Marco Polo's mistaking a rhinoceros for a unicorn, Eco tours the labyrinth of intellectual history, illuminating the ways in which we project the familiar onto the strange. Absence is to love as wind is to fire: it extinguishes the little flame, it fans the big. In a careful unveiling of the fabulous and the false, Eco shows us how serendipities - unanticipated truths - often spring from mistaken ideas. Exploring the "Force of the False," Eco uncovers layers of mistakes that have shaped human history, such as Columbus's assumption that the world was much smaller than it is, leading him to seek out a quick route to the East via the West and thus fortuitously "discovering" America. Umberto Eco's latest work unlocks the riddles of history in an exploration of the "linguistics of the lunatic," stories told by scholars, scientists, poets, fanatics, and ordinary people in order to make sense of the world. Violence and fear-based training were not permitted, and subsequently the animals and humans share a rare and unique bond. The motley little circus troupe is a family, with a team of committed trainers, its side show of misfits, and at the heart of it, Bram, who follows in his father’s footsteps of learning to train the elephants of the Wunderzirkus, where all the animals are taught their routines through patience and nurturing. From very nearly his first breath, Bram, the head trainer’s newborn son, connects with the new baby elephant, Modoc, and the feeling is clearly mutual. The story opens with the charming convergence of two babies being born at the same time, on the Gunterstein family farm in the heart of the Black Forest, where circus elephants are lovingly raised and trained with deeply attentive care. Author Ralph Helfer writes with painter-quality colors, bringing to life the beautiful life-long friendship between a young German boy and an unforgettable elephant. “Modoc The True Story of the Greatest Elephant That Ever Lived,” is one such example, and it is a story that is both deeply touching and achingly heartbreaking. Humans, too, can cultivate their own friendships with fellow members of the vast species pool, and throughout history some unforgettable stories have emerged. Friendships come in many combinations, and unlikely ones within the animal kingdom never cease to astound, with dogs making friends with owls, and cats cozying up with mice. Ultimately, Off-World is a fantasy tour de force, a harrowing Alice in Wonderland. Indeed, it's difficult to know which talent to admire more: the writing or the artwork. De La Rosa's novel starts with promising vigor, its two protagonists as fiery and intractable as the best romance novel matches often are. The two have immediate sparks, but Ana María has a betrothed back home and Gideon can't let anything distract him from his goal - until political conspiracy and danger forces their hands into a marriage of convenience that is anything but. She's intoxicated by one Gideon Fox, a biracial man who has elevated himself to Parliament and is dedicated to abolishing the Atlantic slave trade. There, she experiences what it's like to live free from the strict rules of her father. This first Luna sisters story follows Ana María Luna Valdés, as she and her younger sisters escape Mexico during the French occupation for the safer, rainier climes of Victorian London. Liana De La Rosa is the latest author to bring the real history of people of color to traditionally published historical romance. She soon finds the heart and soul of the southern town.
